What is Macross Plus? and what is it about?

Macross Plus

This is an anime released by Manga Entertainment in both the UK and US. There are two aspects to consider, the four-part OVA (Original Video Animation) and the Macross Plus Movie.

The Story

The plot revolves around the three main characters, Isamu Dyson - a hot-shot pilot, Guld Goa Bowman - a test pilot and Myung Fang Lone - the producer of the number one Pop Star in the Galaxy, Sharon Apple.

Seven years prior they went there separate ways, under strange circumstances even though they were very close. By chance they are reunited and the four-part OVA follows their story. Isamu is now a maverick pilot in the UN Spacey but is transferred back to his home, the planet Eden as a test pilot for YF-19 in the Super Nova Project. There he discovers that the pilot for the YF-21, is Guld his former friend and rival working for the opposing team.

The tension between the two quickly mounts, but they are further increased when Sharon Apple lands on the planet Eden for her concert bringing along with her, Myung the producer. Myung was a girl who loved to sing but she gave all that up and is discontented with her life. She goes to Star Hill, a place of fond memories but so does Guld who saw the press conference following Sharon's arrival. By chance Isamu also turns up and tempers flare as Myung is a mutual ex-girfriend of both.

The Mecha

One of the great things about the Macross Saga in general is the Mecha or sometimes called Valkyrie, huge piloted robots that do battle. For the Super Nova Project they are testing the new Advanced Variable Fighter, which like other mechs can change into three modes during battle. Initially it is in its aircraft mode where it represents a high-end fighter. It also has a Gerwalk and Battleoid mode used for high manuever close combat.
